Ontario Government Recognizes ASCO During Annual Nonprofit Appreciation Week

February 15, 2024

Aurora, ON — (February 15, 2024) — This week marks the 3rd Annual Nonprofit Appreciation Week in Ontario, celebrating the 58,000 non-profit organizations and their nearly 850,000 team members across the province. Addiction Services Central Ontario (ASCO) is one organization being recognized this week for its exceptional work in the nonprofit sector. For the past 40 years, ASCO has been a leading provider of treatment for substance abuse, problem gambling, and concurrent disorders in York Region, North York and South Simcoe.

On February 15, the Honourable Michael Parsa, Minister of Children, Community and Social Services, and MPP for Aurora—Oak Ridges—Richmond Hill, visited ASCO to personally acknowledge and express gratitude for its invaluable service to the community. Penny Marrett, Executive Director of ASCO, received the recognition on behalf of the organization.

“I consider it a great honour to be part of the nonprofit sector, where our team directly contributes to the well-being of the communities we serve every single day,” said Penny Marrett. “We are grateful to Minister Parsa and the Ontario Government for recognizing the expertise and commitment of our team who do everything they can to support the individuals and communities we serve. Beyond ASCO, I also want to recognize the dedicated individuals working in the nonprofit sector throughout Ontario for their meaningful and important work.”

The Government of Ontario enacted the Nonprofit Appreciation Week in 2021, after the COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the remarkable contributions of the essential services provided by the nonprofit sector. Nonprofits play an essential role in maintaining healthy, vibrant and inclusive communities across the province. Serving millions of Ontarians annually, nonprofit organizations make a lasting impact on individuals, communities and economies.
